Following the release of We Were Here under his indie rock and shoegaze moniker Stubai, Australian musician Matt Teffer turns towards completely different terrain with his debut ambient work as tsubai. Inspired by a journey to Greenland's Ilulissat Icefjord in July 2025, ilulissat is a deeply immersive reflection on one of the planet’s most awe-inspiring landscapes.

Named after the Greenlandic word for ‘icebergs’, the album captures the majesty and mystery of the icescapes of Ilulissat. Transfixed by the scale, shifting forms and colours of the icebergs, Matt returned home to Sydney inspired to translate his experience into sound.

Using nothing but electric guitar as its sole sound source, ilulissat weaves vast, glacial soundscapes through meticulously layered recordings. Patient movements and stillness give way to emotional swells, evoking towering ice formations slowly emerging from the mist before opening into expansive, soaring passages reminiscent of a seabird sailing the arctic air above the fjord.

Though shaped by the isolation of frozen icescapes, there are currents of warmth and humanity beneath ilulissat’s surface. Subtle melodies emerge from the myriad layers like light glowing and refracted through ancient ice. Composed on the opposite side of the world from the place that inspired it, tsubai carries the sense of wonder of Ilulissat across oceans and into sound.
