Sons of Melancholia is a project of David Nizet, a Belgian electronic music producer operating under various aliases since the 90s. Now dedicated almost exclusively to experimental music, his new album ‘Hyperliquid’ is an introspective journey through atmospheric soundscapes, immersive drones, obscured textures and treated field recordings. The album takes the listener through varied sonic environments, from the light, airy and expansive to the submerged, hypnotic and contemplative. The compositions display a level of refinement and restraint, balanced with an ever-present emotional undercurrent, underscoring David’s experience and dedication to his craft.
The following quotes were selected by David to accompany Hyperliquid:
"Within you there is a stillness and sanctuary to which you can retreat at any time and be yourself."
–Hermann Hesse
"Chaos is rejecting all you have learned, chaos is being yourself."
–Emil Cioran

Perceptual Tapes, the Hobart-based independent label known for cultivating meditative and exploratory sonic art, delivers a striking pairing with two new releases: Hyperliquid by Sons of Melancholia and Among Lunar Glaciers by Spectrical. Though distinct in atmosphere, both albums craft immersive, slow-burning sonic experiences that blur the lines between inner consciousness and outer cosmos.
Hyperliquid is the latest work by Belgian artist David Nizet, under his Sons of Melancholia moniker. Known for operating under various aliases since the 1990s, Nizet now devotes himself fully to experimental music. This release is a contemplative journey through shimmering drones, obscured textures, and layered field recordings. Each track unfolds with patience and restraint, shifting from light and expansive to submerged and hypnotic. It’s music that breathes—inviting introspection and stillness, as reflected in the Hermann Hesse and Emil Cioran quotes that accompany the release. Hyperliquid is both refined and emotionally resonant, a testament to Nizet’s decades of sonic craft and philosophical intent.

Together, these two works showcase the range and ambition of Perceptual Tapes. Hyperliquid journeys inward, guided by memory, solitude, and stillness; Among Lunar Glaciers voyages outward, imagining alien topographies in shimmering, distorted detail. Yet both share a devotion to process, texture, and the slow revelation of emotional space. With these releases, the label continues to build a distinct identity: one that values thoughtful composition, tactile sound design, and deep listening as both an artistic and meditative practice.
